This year, our annual R/C Scale Day was held back in the South East Area, after having been kindly hosted for the last few years by the London area club, Bickley MFC. This time the Hastings club had agreed to our use of their magnificent Middlebridge site between Eastbourne and Bexhill.
The day dawned bright and clear but a stiff breeze soon developed and whether it was that which kept people away or the football World Cup, or possibly the British Grand Prix, or even the Scottish Open golf, but the expected support was not forthcoming, only nine entries being recorded. However, despite this the standard of the models was very high and nobody seemed to have trouble coping with the strongish wind.
As usual, the judging was done by the pilots themselves and the clear winner turned out to be Richard Crapp's beautiful Fairey Swordfish, complete with folding wings which enables it to be carried in the car, but not through a standard doorway space! The detail on this model is quite mind-blowing and it thoroughly deserved to win the main event, but as Richard comes from outside the area, he was not eligible for the Towner Trophy which went to Rick Stevens for his well known Erco Ercoupe.
